- Support Great composer and a well-composed portrait, but am I the only viewer here who finds his facial expression a bit odd? Though maybe that's appropriate for someone who wrote quirky dissonances and had a kind of magical tonal rescue technique (that's what I call it; I don't know if there are some music theorists who have another name for it, but it's a real signature of his style and something Shostakovich also used and picked up from him, as he was 15 years younger than Prokofiev). One could say that his somewhat odd expression while looking away from the camera but being traditionally and formally dressed like a conventional gentleman in a formal setting is thereby somewhat of a probably unintentional metaphor, though I could be reaching. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:10, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Since I don't think you've worked with photographing people and models, I can see why you find the setup and expression strange. It is so hard to get most people to relax in front of a camera if they are not used to such attention. I usually have some time with "warm up photos" when I work with inexperienced models. He is rather young in this photo, and the set-up of doing a photo shoot was probably way outside his comfort zone. It was also a big production getting your photo taken in those days, no warm op photos, do whatever the photographer told you, and hold perfectly still for those one to maybe three shots that were made. My guess is that he was just very uncomfortable with the whole situation. --Cart (talk) 20:17, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- I think Carter is right... The LOC has the entire series, and he is quite grim or nonplussed throughout. I know personally, when I'm the one behind the camera (a rarity these days), I prefer candids over staged shots for this very reason. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 21:52, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- I've done posed snaps with my and other people's cellphones, but not for anything high-pressure. I take your points. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:00, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- We are so used to cellphones with cameras these day, it's a totally different situation than it was only ten years ago. I think we are forgetting what a big thing a photo was 100 years ago. And Chris, even at fashion shoots, you sometimes get the best shot at the end when the model is just relaxing, thinking it's all finished. I like the almost Margaret Cameron style of that shot. :-) --Cart (talk) 22:48, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- That is excellent. Thanks for the share! — Chris Woodrich (talk) 23:12, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, it is. Back in the day, way before cellphones, I had an Instamatic. My brother was always the serious photographer in the family, but he is not interested in Commons. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:01, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
